Hundreds of people came out this weekend to mourn the death of Chen Ziming, named one of the Black Hands behind the 1989 Tiananmen protests. He was a thoughtful and principled man, an influential intellectual whose ability to publish or be heard was removed after 1989. He went to the US recently for treatment for cancer, but returned to China despite living under constant surveillance. He told me how he had been reluctant to become involved in the 1989 protests. After being released from prison in 1994 on medical parole, he became one of the earliest subjects of stability maintenance . Two cars, two motorcycles and a bicycle followed us for five or six years, he told me, describing how life changed for him and his wife, Three guys sat outside our flat. They got rid of the elevator guy and put someone there. Their own words were, Were moving the prison to your house. Your home is now a prison.
