Huskies Men’s Volleyball Spiked it up in Edmonton Keyano Huskies men’s volleyball team came away from a weekend tournament in Edmonton with what head coach Keegan Kuhr says “was nothing but positives” for his team as they continue to prepare for the 2014-2015 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regular season. Coming up on the short end against two Canadian Interuniversity Sports teams - University of Alberta Alumni and Grant MacEwan Griffins - Kuhr said the Huskies had to adapt to a different style of play. “It is no excuse…but they play with a different brand (volleyball) that doesn’t spin as much as the one we (ACAC) use, so it took a while for us to adapt to that,” said Kuhr. “We battled through that and we did well against the CIS teams…just not going through the motion.” Saturday against ACAC opponents, the Huskies fell to the Lethbridge Kodiaks in a close match while defeating The Kings Eagles 25-19, 27-25, 18-25, 25-22 at the Saville Centre. “I was happy with the way we controlled the match against Kings. The afternoon game against Lethbridge gave me a chance to look at different lineups and different sets.” Asked if anyone Huskies player stood out, Kuhr replied: “Russell (Veronelly) played well. He has put in a lot of work during the off season.” Veronelly, a right side, is a second year Huskies student/athlete (College Prep) from Calgary. Up next for the Keyano Huskies men’s volleyball team is preseason play in Winnipeg, Manitoba with the Red River Community College Invitational Volleyball Tournament October 10-12, 2014. Some of the teams participating include Lakehead University Thunderwolves and Concordia Thunder. “We are going there with the mentality that we are expected to win.”
