I CAME, I SAW, I CONGA-ED! Well, I just finished my three solo gigs (well, solo + Brad) this past weekend and had a blast. I surprised myself with how chatty I was onstage, something I never do with the Gurus. My only comparable experiences were when I appeared with Lucky Oceans at Fremantle Arts Centre a couple of years ago and then as part of last years Spiegeltent Program in Melbourne however on both those occasions I had an interviewer on stage to help me direct the conversation and draw me out. Musically the show felt really good too, rocking surprisingly hard at times despite the absence of any rhythm section. We even managed a fairly creditable version of Leilani sans-tribal drumming, shocking ourselves as much as anyone when it worked. My favourite part of the show was when Brad and I played a few songs together on acoustic guitars. Zanzibar in particular was a revelation in that format. I doubt youll ever see that happen in a Gurus show - the difference in onstage volume would be too difficult to make work. The mics on the acoustic guitars would feedback terribly. Too bad. There are no plans to do any more of these gigs at the moment but I certainly would have no qualms about it should the opportunity arise. Right now Im gonna focus on the proper Hoodoo Gurus stuff we have coming up, getting ready for Splendour In The Grass and - you heard it here first - a little bit of new recording, featuring James Baker and Clyde Bramley and…? More details later once we get it off the ground but, you can count on it, the wheels are already well in motion. Dave
