I CAN UNDERSTAND why many rescues wont take owner surrenders... First, at least those dogs have someone [hopefully] advocating for them (cant say I agree with this most of the time). But second, its just as emotionally draining... I cant tell you how many times weve offered to help people and made arrangements, moved our schedule around, etc. etc. to accommodate someone or to go pick up a dog, only for someone to change their mind or give the dog away to someone after making arrangements with us. Then I hope and pray that the dog is safe and cared for -- and not in another situation where it will be dumped or unwanted.... This is the situation with Mossy, the chocolate lab I posted last night. I sent her owner the paperwork, made arrangements for Mossy to arrive tomorrow. Nobody locally had contacted her until we did and her emails/posts said that Mossy needed to go now or she was going to end up in a shelter because the woman had no choice. We really dont have much of any space right now, but I felt ethically obligated because shes a senior lab right in our backyard... So I get an email I found a family and will let you know if it doesnt work out after we already have adoption interest in her and I spent part of my day yesterday emotionally struggling over whether to take in another dog while we are trying to get our numbers down. yes, this is about me emotionally... But its also about people keeping their word and respecting an offer of assistance that was not lightly given... I feel the moral of the story is dont poop on people who are trying to help you... In the end, I worry about whether Mossy will be safe and have a home where she wont end up in the same situation. Because if someone is willing to take her to a kill shelter -- where the person is WELL aware that Mossy may quickly be euthanized -- I cant imagine their judgment in placing her into a home is all that great... :(
