***I Dont Know Why Im Writing This*** **Just Need To Get It Off - TopicsExpress

***I Dont Know Why Im Writing This*** **Just Need To Get It Off My Chest I Suppose** Ive never been a fan of fandoms. My problem with most fandoms, including the Potter fandom, is that it doesnt appear to allow for individual expression unless that individual expression happens to be in line with what people within the fandom deem correct. Whenever I voice my opinion that Umbridge isnt as bad as everyone paints her, I am not welcomed nicely by the fandom. I get some people agreeing with my sentiments, but for the most part people just try to disagree with me, making me feel like my opinion doesnt matter. The same goes for my opinions about Ron Weasleys character as well. As another example, I tried out Doctor Who once and I didnt like it. I said so once on this page and someone posted something along the lines of WHAT?!?!?!?!?! How can you not like it?!, not realising that people have their own minds and can have opinions other than what is standard. I did in fact end up liking it, but at the time I had decided that I didnt like it. Half of what kept me away from Doctor Who so long was the fandom. Thats certainly the case with Supernatural at the moment. Oddly enough one of the the only fandoms Ive found that I can embrace is the A Song of Ice and Fire fandom. Not so much Game of Thrones, but ASOIAF. I cannot recall a single time I have ever seen someone attacked for their beliefs about the ASOIAF series like they are seemingly everywhere else. Everyone has their own opinions and these opinions are respected. No one is put down for believing something that isnt considered the norm. At least not that Ive seen. If anything, the differing beliefs appear to be embraced by the fan base. I guess my point is, I dont want to be a part of a fandom where everyone has to have the same opinion or risk becoming an outcast. The fact is, no two people experience fiction the same way. Everyone should be allowed to have an opinion that differs from others without feeling as though they arent welcome to it. I know some people will say something along the lines of its not all people in the fandom that do this, and perhaps thats true. It doesnt change the fact that Ive encountered enough people like this to make me not want to be a part of that world. ~Colin, The Master of Whisperers
