I GOD: All things are possible! Mark 9:14-29 17…, “Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that … dashes him down; …I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so.” 19He[Jesus] answered them, “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? … Bring him to me.” 20And they brought the boy to Him. …[the father said,] “…if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.” 23Jesus said …, “If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.”[and Jesus cured the boy] … 28When He had entered the house, His disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29He said to them, “This kind can come out only through prayer.” In certain circles when confronted with an overwhelming problem, I’ll often hear someone say, “So what? ‘I Pencil!’ Keep the faith, find the team and keep moving.” That is shorthand for a famous 1958 essay by Leonard Read. The basic point is, that a pencil is one of simplest things we depend on in our world, yet there is NO ONE PERSON that can, or even knows how to, construct a pencil starting with nothing but raw materials and their own hands. Countless people must be involved. If that is true, than it might also be true that YOU by YOURSELF cannot know in advance all the details of how a problem will be solved. SO WHAT? You can’t even make a pencil by yourself! How often do we get stuck because we, by ourselves, can’t imagine a solution to a problem? Do we get stuck praying by ourselves? If we cannot see a solution do we fail to move forward? Do we doubt that God will provide? Perhaps our alignment is askew or we are not taking the right approach? I will never suggest being irresponsible, but I will suggest for consideration, that if we are following God’s Will for us in our lives, and if we “team” thru fellowship with God’s people, and pray together with our family in Christ (as I think today’s reading suggests) – what we alone find overwhelming might become possible. Perhaps, with this approach, I can imagine Jesus saying “If you are able! Really? I God!” Just a thought. All views on today’s reading are welcome.
