I JUST SENT AN EMAIL TO THE OFFICE OF RICK PERRY, GOVERNOR OF TEXAS. HERE IT IS: Dear Governor Perry, Another case of Ebola has been diagnosed in Dallas, and this individual flew into the DFW airport on a Frontier Airlines flight, with 132 passengers, the day before she started showing symptoms. While widespread outbreak of the disease is still unlikely, I think most reasonable people would agree it would be prudent to anticipate this possibility, and keep our powder dry on this issue. Approximately 25% of Texans still do not have health care, largely attributed to the fact that federal funds have not yet been used to expand Medicaid within Texas. One can only imagine the nightmare scenario of a poor family without health insurance contracting the Ebola virus and is hesitant to report it because there would be no way they could withstand the financial burden placed upon them. Wouldn’t now be the time to expand Medicaid in Texas to address the possibility of uninsured people getting sick, failing to make that call to health officials, and putting countless other innocent people at risk?
