I absolutely LOVE BlueZones (the book) and highly respect the author Dan Buettner - who is a friend of mine. But I had to come to the aid of a wise RD who took Dan to task on his understandable misunderstanding of metabolic nutrition when comparing Greek Yogurt with cocaine-a-cola. To my patients whove eaten Greek Yogurt (Chobani, Oikos) with fruit (jelly) at the bottom the way Ive taught you in your path to better health, feel free to add your comments in the timeline of the post attached. Heres what I said to my friend (and very important contributor to describing longevity societies, but not a trained nutrition specialist), Dan Buettner: Oops! wrong tree BZ! LOVE you BUT youre beating up one of my buds here...so this is the #RealityMeetsScience of it: Actually there is no comparison between super junk sugar pop and mild junk Greek yogurt with so called fruit (~10g of sugar jelly) at the bottom. But first a simple trick to make your fat free (or low fat) Greek yogurt with so called fruit at the bottom healthier - dont eat the fruit (ie sugar jelly) at the bottom. Thatll cut the sugar by about 75% (down from 14 gram per 4oz of filling and otherwise pretty wholesome Greek yogurt), something you cannot do with sugar junk pop. And since the yogurt has been on top (with the time from factory to store) long enough that through diffusion just a touch of the sugar and flavor will have permeated throughout making it taste great without having to stir all the sugar (so called fruit) in from the bottom. At least the fruit at the bottom gives you a choice (to not stir in the extra - thankfully mostly sequestered at the bottom - sugar/jelly/fruit in), better than the ones that have already premixed the sugar in. And make no mistake, there is absolutely no comparison between the totally empty calories of thin liquid sugar pop, which delivers zero added nutrition nor hunger reduction (and for which no one stops at 4oz incidentally) vs the filling power of 4oz of thick, relatively protein rich, blood pressure lowering potassium rich (among other important nutrients devoid in cocaine-a-cola), even if one did mix in the tiny 10g touch (40 cal) of junk sugar at the bottom. Their are better sugar bullies for BZ to beat up on than fat free Oikos Greek yogurt with fruit at the bottom (or Chobani). Believe me....just look around at 95% of everything else around you at the airport (which is where Ill be today off to a Cardiometabolic medical conference). Ill post a pic of how to eat healthy at the airport as an ode to my friend Dan Buettner, including my trick to turn Greek yogurt with so-called fruit at the bottom at my Facebook page later today PS to my metabolic Lifestyle University program patients: I made one more comment at the Blue Zone post, but Ive run out of time now so please feel free to check it out on the comment string at the post linked below and post your experience of how the way weve taught you to tweak Greek Yogurt fruit at the bottom has been part of your journey towards optimal health
