I actually find it offensive that the Voting Rights Act is necessary. Why is it that my people need a special act for a constitutional right? Why cant we be treated like every other people, of Irish, English, Asian, German, French, etc. descent, and just take our inalienable rights for granted in our country? Why did other groups come off the boat and have an open door policy to everything American except us? No other ethnic group has had the government say to then: You cant vote. You aint marry this person. You cant eat in this restaurant. You cant go to this school. You cant live in this neighborhood. You cant swim in this pool. You cant stay in this hotel. You cant come in the front door. ALL of these rights others take for granted had to granted to my people by an ACT OF CONGRESS! I believe that black people have made major gains--to exist in a society that has slammed the door in their faces and then turned the deadbolt lock. I guess I am tired of legislation after legislation to make me equal to the majority when it is my right to begin with. We deserve the WHOLE cake of equality--at one time--not one slice at a time.
