I actually read with one of my students as an AmeriCorps tutor about the Plains People. Also remember learning about various types of Native American housing in 4th grade. Oh yeah, and took a class in college that had as part of the curriculum a book with various Native American traditional stories. It gets taught in some places, but not to extensively. Much the time, you have to take initiative to get past the official US history and into the depth of it beyond what the government prefers you to know. But, as with a lot of propagandized education, you get, on both the left and right, the story they want you to believe, and, also from left and right, people willing to tell you the story that you should believe.
