I admire the enthusiasm and community fostered by CrossFit gyms everywhere, but I believe now more than ever that CrossFit should be considered a sport and not a way to get fit. In the past two months my good friend had to have his spine fused at L4-L5 from a CrossFit mishap and I met a women who dislocated her shoulder during a CrossFit session. Can you get into great shape participating in CrossFit? Sure, you can. Last year I got into great shape playing Rugby- I hurt my knee, I had a team mate dislocate his shoulder, another shatter his ankle and a third get over 40 stitches to his forehead and face. but the average Joe wouldnt play Rugby to get fit. I encourage the Joes and Janes out there to build stability before strength and strength before power. Then and only then, if you have a passion for the Sport of CrossFit take the plunge. Do not go into CrossFit as your introductory to fitness.
