I always explain to Benny that the stories we come up with in our imaginations prior to bedtime are superior to the cartoons and picture books that populate his aesthetic diet throughout the earlier portion of the day, as the former exist devoid of the influence of marketing, editorial input, overt and subtle censorship guidelines, the basic will to conform, the widespread will to condescend to the burgeoning youth population, the myth that reality is simple, the pressure to be cheerful, and the increasing suppression of oddness, idiosyncrasy, spontaneity, madness, systemic revolt, latent uprising, the fundamentally inscrutable, and of course the baldly poetic or the thematically vague. By which point we no longer require bedtime stories, as the poor kids fast asleep :P
