I always get angry when people say that Muslim families mistreat their daughters. That Muslim families are anti-woman. That Muslim parents just want to marry of their own daughters. That Muslim families dont value their daughters education. When people like Bill Maher make claims like that - it angers me. They blanket the true narrative of my parents with the misleading, dishonest portayal of Muslims as menacing, ISIS-supporting women killers. They equate my parents to mass murderers, and I am not going to apologize for taking offensive to that. My parents are people who have done everything they can in this world. People who have worked day and night so that my sister and I can get what they couldnt dream of having when they were a child. People who pray more than 5x a day for our future and guidance in life. Theyre not the Muslims that Bill Maher wants them to be. I got an email from my mother today. This may be a shocker to all those Islamophobes and Bill Maher who constantly tell me that Im not Muslim, because 1.) I didnt undergo FGM 2.) I dont wear the hijab 3.) I didnt get married when I was 7. The email reads: I am always asking Allah to help my daughters. I always pray that you guys complete a great education, have a great professional career, and to be independent. Your father and I don’t want you to depend on your husband’s income. But once you are independent and find the right person, we want you to have a happy marriage to have healthy grandchildren that we could give lots of love. The love that you never received from our own grandparents. Yes, people, Muslim families do love their daughters. And my parents would rather die than to see their daughters suffer.
