I am Thebulas Mathebula.yes we are the kings baba we need to take over what belong to us .we are coming very soon The existence of Tsonga/Shangaan people is usually attributed to Soshangane, which couldn’t be further from the truth. We existed even before that. As a matter of fact, the documented history of my people, va ka Baloyi, goes as far back as 1499. We have our roots in Central Africa but couldn’t stand the pressure of the Arab traders and thus migrated to the East of Africa, along the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. I am a descendant of Nchangamire (imire meaning ruler in Arabic), who was one of the rulers at the time. Nchangamire, Nxolwana and their children settled in the present day Zimbabwe, when the rest of the group continued migrating east and settled along the Indian Ocean, in Mozambique and named their settlement “Vutsonga” which comes from “Dzonga” meaning “south.” They enjoyed their stay in beautiful Moz until Soshangane and his goons came and attacked them. Forcing them to bail, once again, this time headed to the west, which is the present day Limpopo Province. They moved westwards until they reached the confluence of the Rivubye (Levubu) and Vembe rivers where va ka Maluleke (Vanwati clan) had already settled; so the clan moved further west and settled east of the present day Tzaneen. Their settlements stretched all the way from Tzaneen to the citrus farm colony now termed Constantia, where va Duroi and va CP Minaar & Seun now ply their trade. Their stay there was short-lived though, the apartheid regime made sure of that, forcibly moving them to N’wamitwa where N’wamitwa (the ruler at the time) bought additional farms – Nkambako, Runnymede, Meadowbank and N’wamungololo – to settle his people. This is where you will find the Valoyi clan today. The name Valoyi has nothing to do with witchcraft by the way. It is derived from the nickname Varwozwi/ Valozwi which means “destroyers.” In the 1600s Nchangamire destroyed the Portuguese and was able to drive them away from Zimbabwe into Mozambique. The first African to defeat the Europeans effectively. The Ngunis, however, believed Baloyi was synonymous with witchcraft and that’s where the surname “ Mathebula ” was born. It comes from the word “ukuthebula” which is a process of turning a person into a zombie, using witchcraft. If you’re an ardent viewer of Isibaya, you will know what this is. Va ka Valoyi/Baloyi belong to the big family ya Vanyai. Vanyayi are found amongst various language group speakers spread out in Southern African countries that includes, South Africa (Bapedi, Basotho, VhaVenda, Balobedu, Vatsonga), Zimbabwe (Kalanga famous royal families of Nchangamire and Mwenemutapa), Zambia (Ba Lozi), Botswana (Banyayi, Balozi, Kalanga) and Namibia (Balozi). Vanyayi are also known as Vacopi in Mozambique. The name is derived from their bow and arrow fighting tactics (ku copa, which means to shoot with an arrow), that killed a lot of Nguni warriors with their bow and arrows. Other surnames that fall under Vanyayi are Mathebula, Mkansi, Makaringe, Magoveni, Munyai, Bvuma and N’wamitwa. As nwana wa ka Baloyi I can’t marry into these any of these surnames. I recently found out kuri Matobela is also Baloyi. My father is late, so is my grandfather, thus I can’t verify this but I will continue to research. What I do know is that there’s about 11 surnames that fall under Vanyayi. 11 sub clans.
