I am against war and I am against horrendous manners of death. I am against death. But if you are going to have a war, it seems to me you should do anything you can to annihilate your enemy, and nations, in fact, do just that. So why is Syrian (or Iraqi or German) chemical warfare such a big deal? Chemical and biological warfare sucks and leads to a most unpleasant death, lately among civilians. But I fail to see how it is any different from what ancient generations suffered with the invention of the long bow, the repeating rifle, the biplane, the hand grenade, the mortar, the rocket, napalm and the A-bomb. War is hell. War should be abolished. Let us work to oppose those who go to war, especially those who war against their own citizens, but let’s not pretend that one form of death by new technology is any worse than any other. To wring our hands over one form of warfare admits to the acceptability of other forms. And to say that one side is morally worse than another for targeting civilian populations ignores history since at least as far back as the Civil War.
