I am always trying to improve my Lego photography skill ever since I started collecting Lego. Part of the hobby is also taking review grade photographs once the model is built. Taking good pictures of sets is pretty straight-forward for small sets or minifigures. All you need are 2 sets of lights, 1 white background and you are set. However I have always have a big problem taking large Lego models like Technic flagships and large Lego sets like modular, Maersk ship etc. Either my table is not big enough or the background is not large enough (the largest piece of paper I bought so far is mahjong paper). Then there is a problem with the lighting. I have 2 large Ikea table lamps with 2 1300 lumen bulbs where while it is bright enough to illuminate the whole studio, it casts a terrible shadow and oversaturate some parts of the models. I needed soft lighting to achieve the best photo results and to make the colors stand out. So after much thought I decided to get the following:- 1) White cloth 1.2m wide and 3m long and another white cloth 1.2m wide and 2m long 2) 4 single bar cloths hangers from Aeon Big costing RM 17, where it is the cheapest so far I found 3) Some calipers from Daisho As you can see from the setup, I used the white cloth as both background and to make soft light on my models. The table used is big enough for the Cargo plane to fit inside, something which was not possible previously. The photos were taken using my current camera which is a Nikon Coolpix P510. I used no flash, low ISO (about 400 or less), low shutter speed and a tripod. I have to use the 2 second timer for every shot as even pressing the shutter manually can result in blurring. So far Im quite happy with the results, as the colors are not over saturated compared to previous photos taken. The photos are also sharper due to the use of a tripod.
