I am an atheist and my fiance is of a Jewish background. She is not strongly observant, and it is more for cultural than religious reasons that she considers herself to be Jewish. One issue that we have had some debate over is circumcision. I am strongly of the view that any son we may one day have should not be circumcised (unless there was a genuine medical reason) as that would be to impose a religious belief on somebody who is not yet capable of deciding for themselves. My fiance is quite keen on continuing this tradition. Whilst Judaism claims that it does not seek to convert people, or impose its beliefs on others I find this to be hugely contradictory, isnt the act of circumcision the ultimate act of religious imposition? Would be interested in hearing the thoughts of others. -- If you have a question you want answered by the community, send it to [email protected]
