I am deeply saddened and spiritually broken (although not surprised) by the verdict of the Trayvon Martin case. This country, the United States of America, needs to reflect and learn from this tragedy. Trayvon Martin is a symbol for the stereotypical plight of young black men who are suspected of doing something wrong, even if they are carrying nothing more than a packet of skittles! It is a mindset that views young boys and men who are people of color as deviant and nothing but a threat to “you” and society. We must do a better job at educating our youth in recognizing the beauty of diverse communities, both visible and non-visible. We must address racial profiling head-on by focusing on the root causes of inequality.
