I am deeply saddened to learn that my mentor and good friend Penelope Niven passed last night. She was one of the kind souls, a writer and teacher who could read your work and tear it into little pieces and hand it back as if she were handing you flower petals. I once criticized her for being too nice and she just smiled and said she didnt believe anyone could be too nice. She gave me nothing but patience and praise.
