I am going to try to make this short, but it probably wont be, so please bear with me. Today I went on an interview for a place that only provides massage, same MT/owner for 20+ years. Therapists are independent contractors, but required to sign non-compete agreements. Although the initial phone interview and then verbal interview went very well, everything shifted when I started the practical. She told me EXACTLY how to do the entire massage, just a few examples: start on the legs for 10 minutes, warm the tissue then go deeper, firm pressure on the feet, start with compressions on the back, finish with 10 minutes on the neck, etc. From that point on, I got negative vibes. She said that my pressure was only good enough for warming the tissue (which I was still doing), but then complained almost immediately when I went deeper. She asked me why I wasnt working on the glutes when I still had her in prone and had every intention of doing so. She told me that she didnt like that I wasnt doing deep work on her erectors using my thumbs, but I responded that I prefer to use forearms and elbows. By the time I was halfway through, I stopped asking about pressure because everything was either too light or too deep. She said she has other interviews and then will let me know but I dont expect to hear from her again. I know that you cant please everyone, but most of my clients are usually grateful and full of praise, and I can honestly say that in 5 years doing this, I have never received such negative feedback from anyone! I guess I just dont understand why somebody who has been doing this for so long would not appreciate that every therapist has a different style. Also, when you dictate the entire massage as a client, and criticize the therapist frequently, it throws off the flow of the entire session. Has this ever happened to anybody else? I am so bummed because I had been really excited about the prospect of working there.
