I am having the time of my life in Hyder, AK. And I’m only in Hyder! I’m heading up to Denali and beyond. Vanna (my RT) is filthy with bugs and dirt and she’s loving every minute of it. I’m treating her like a 4X4 lately, up on logging roads and the like. Instead of getting a newer RT, I might completely restore Vanna and jack up her suspension, ha. I could smell adventure when I left for the Tongass Park bear watching platform this morning. I arrived at the bear viewing area and the hardcore photographers with their $10,000 lens were set up; they had been waiting for hours and days for a grizzly. I surveyed the platform, set up my tripod and along came a gnarly Grizz five minutes later with a piece of its lip hanging off from a fight long ago (so said the park worker). I got some great video of this tough ol Grizz catching and eating salmon. (Now if I can just get iPhoto and my new Sony video camera to get along…) Next stop, Salmon Glacier. The weather at the summit was pretty socked in with fog today but much clearer a few kilometres down the road. Nothing prepared me for the majesty of Salmon Glacier, simply beautiful. So far along the Cassiar Highway, there are boon docking opportunities EVERYWHERE. Forget what the Milepost says; campgrounds are a revenue source for the magazine so they don’t want people sleeping for free in roadside turnouts. I boondocked along the Cassiar but am staying at Camp Run a Muck in Hyder right now. (The owners want to buy my RT!) See you on the Alaskan mainland. Peace out.
