I am kind of divided with this issue. as an ex-muslim, i do understand what these moderate muslims cry about. those fanatics are indeed exhibiting a particular extreme portrayal of muslim minorities. They are not the only one who holds islamic paradigm. but, knowing the Al-Quran is delivered in some kind of poetic verses with open interpretation, it doesnt make it hard for a muslim to interpret those verses into something violence and the opposite, just like theory of peace. we all know that in peace studies, there are many definitions of peace and there are many ways to see the relationship between war and peace. Some say peace is just a brief intermission between war, some say to achieve peace all we need to have is war, and some say peace is the continuous effort to avoid war (war isnt something necessary to achieve peace). and thats how muslims interpret Allahs verses and Muhammads teachings. the problem is, even though we all know that the problem lies within interpretation, the moderate muslims, who have the most of members among other groups of muslims, choose to be apathetic and choose to stay silent on this matter. they are kind of opportunistic and afraid to speak up. And they have some kind of weird brotherhood and sisterhood feeling. They can easily get aggravated when muslims and islam get criticized. and when that happens, these moderates create temporary union with other groups, including extremes, just for the sake of defending religion, since they feel its like an attack to the religion, and therefore, an attack to a part of their identity. if only they were to choose to condemn these extremes, choose to excommunicate the extremists, i think the world wouldnt blame islam in first place. So, if they want people to stop blaming islam, they need to do housekeeping first. tame the extremists or at least distance yourself with those extremes. condemn them, denounce them, and broadcast those condemnation to the world, to show that not all muslims agree with the extremists. what muslims have right now is just like what feminists have right now. the loudest ones are the most dangerous ones. you have to muffle them to hear the complete and rational voices among them.
