I am listening to Vin Scully calling the early innings of the Dodgers/Diamondbacks game. I know that my ability to use English was greatly enhanced by listening to Vin from the time I was about 7 years old. I know my deep love of baseball is directly attributable to Vins narrative of the game and the people in it. Ever since Don Drysdale suddenly died, he has worked without a color man. The color man is usually in charge of analysis and history of the plays and players. The color man allows the play by play guy to concentrate on reporting what he sees. Vin is 87 years old. He continues to call the game events perfectly, while simultaneously weaving in history-not only of baseball-but all he has noticed and learned from his nearly 90 years on this planet. He describes todays game and this individual moment in the context of a point in time of a much larger world and time line. I am sure that he has considered retirement many times. We dont know how many more games he will do. If you love baseball, or the brilliant use of language, you should subscribe to the audio service of MLB. (You can buy the whole season for all teams for $20) I know our friend, Charley Steiner, could add to my remarks.
