(I am not a horn expert. I just know enough to know the train is coming if Im at a grade crossing) In a previous trend, theres a question about two horn cords. As you can see on this rooftop view, we see two horns to go with the two cords. Back in those days the railroads just accept certain equipment as standard, and the BLAT horn was the standard. You have to remember horn sound louder if you are in front of it (Just remember the football game at half time with the marching band). You use the rear horn to call back the brakeman who is guarding the rear of the train (before two way communications). Otherwise with a front only horn, the brakeman may not hear it and be left behind. The people living along the rails dont like the BLAT horn, and the railroads started to look for better sounding horns. The later standard was the two facing forward and one facing the rear type.That pretty much eliminate the second horn. (Photo scanned from an 8x10)
