I am not saying that you should go out and buy a bunch of tools - TopicsExpress

I am not saying that you should go out and buy a bunch of tools you do not need, but you should have a few. Where plumbing is concerned a good four way screwdriver, a medium sized pair of channel locks, and good quality plunger are just the ticket… they can either get you out of trouble or get you so far into trouble that you need to call a pro. That’s a joke… if a job is over your head just don’t bother with it, support your local economy by paying a professional to do it right the first time. Having said that, there are things that many people prefer to do themselves, such as tightening certain fixtures like that loose shower handle. A good four way screwdriver is often all you need. If the handle on your toilet is loose you can use the channel locks to tighten it from under the lid. For the dreaded drain issues don’t bother with any acids or drain cleaners that are caustic, they really can do more harm than good. Instead invest in a good plunger, none of the fancy super plungers or gag gift types either, treat yourself to a solid flange type plunger that can be folded inside of itself for use on many drains besides your toilet. It is important that you use all of these tools properly, never hammer on the back of a 4 way screwdriver it ruins them. Always apply the channel locks so that the blunt side is pulling on the nut either to tighten or loosen the object. When plunging a sink, fold the flange inward, flatten the entire plunger down and pull up on the drain, this is the most effective way to get a slow sink running faster.
