I am often busy. Sometimes I am very busy. It is not a boast but, the truth. As a result, I sometimes forget appointments to speak with someone on the phone, have a chat online, deliver on a design job etc., These things are happen happen from time to time. in fact, even on some days when I have little or nothing to do, I might be focused on a video game (and now, I have four new ones...including the two I got yesterday evening, that makes 6. But thats none of your business :p ), sleeping or something else that I forget still. What do you do, when you remember that you did not keep your word on an issue? I will tell you what I do. Hard as it will be sometimes, I will pick up my phone and call to apologize or send a message (depending on who it is and, what it is I was to do) then to explain what went wrong. This is something we all need to learn. In fact, sometimes I may be in a bad place and someone wants to get all chatty and I almost chop their head off and, then I contact them to apologize. Like I said, not always fun or easy but, needful. In business...trust me, you want to learn how to do this real fast and real well. I know some clients can be the proverbial pain in the posterior and provoke you, insult you (which is why you need to learn how to select clients and when to select a certain type of client. Probably going to write on that again soon) but, they are the client and, unless you decide to let the job go (and trust me, in some cases, it is needful to do so), you have to try to be calm and do it all the same. This is one reason I have bad blood with a number of printers and artisans in this country. The tailor lies the clothes are almost ready and the day before the occasion, you see he is just cutting the material. The printer lies all is done then two days to collection, he lies that water poured all over the work and he has to start again. He forgot his boy lives on your street and let it slip that he had not even started. The excuses and lies are many. Do not do that to yourself. If you are having challenges and delays in delivering on a job/agreement, try to communicate it as soon as possible. If there is a way to prove it, do so. Maybe it is something you can take a picture of and send, munch a screen chat, take them there to show them or any other way. This builds client trust. they may not like the delay but they at least know you ate not lying. Oddly enough, some people are in many businesses today because they are tired of being lied to and shortchanged by so-called professionals who mess things up or waste so much time and money and deliver trash or nothing it all. A friend recently told me how a guy lied to him that he could make a website for his firm and showed false evidence of the fact. For months this guy was wasting time and one day my friend went to see him and caught him studying tutorials on how to create a website! The guy had no skill, knowledge or experience and, he lied about it. If he as so hungry for money, could he not have met someone who knew how and, worked with the person and then they share the profits? Why lie to get cash and then cannot deliver? If you have too much work to do and cannot make the deadline or take on the work, say so! stop lying! If you have internet wahala, say so! If money no dey to go client office, talk am! Stop lying and then later get caught and lose a client, credibility and respect. It is not worth it. #BusinessSense
