I am pleased that the House approved H.R. 5764, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act of 2014, last week. This measure would authorize the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) through Fiscal Year 2019. The GLRI is a regional restoration program focused on cleaning up degraded “toxic hotspots,” targeting Asian carp and other invasive species, and preventing polluted runoff that closes beaches and causes harmful algal blooms. I applaud the passage of H.R. 5764 as it provides a solid legislative platform to ensure our region continues to work together effectively to restore and protect the Great Lakes.
