I am re-watching Breaking Bad from start to finish. One of the great things about this unforgettable series is the deep-dish music served in EVERY episode. The greatest variety I have ever heard in a TV series. For obvious reasons it is well-seasoned with gangsta stuff…but the LAST song they ever played was Baby Blue by Badfinger as a dying Walter White, taps the pressure gauge, and looks lovingly at the master lab he designed…to cook his trademark blue meth…as he bleeds out and slips away. Early in that episode Walt went back to ABQ, he stole a Volvo…as he cranked it, the tape in the player is El Paso by Marty Robbins…they actually named the episode Felina after Martys femme fatale. Walt is actually singing El Paso as he rigged an M-60 machine gun and 600 rounds of ammo to a garage door opener mechanism designed to sweep from left to right and back as a solenoid pulled the trigger and killed everyone on the building. In one of the 1st season episodes there was a song that exposes a VERY guilty pleasure of mine: Mid-1960s lounge Pop. I am especially fond of the groovy Quincy Jones influenced Playboy Pad stuff with an 8 or 9 piece Jazz ensemble and 8 or 9 voices that occasionally break into a gratuitous scooby-dooby-doo section. Again, this Charlie Steinman piece was perfectly placed as Jesse roamed the Albuquerque late night streets connecting with the meth heads. It would have been SO easy to put a gangsta piece there…but the paradox of this song placed there is perfect yet paradoxical… As I meander, let me add that I believe the single thing that makes this show great is that everyone has the potential to be Walter White: A perfectly normal nerd who as life was pushing back at him did what he had to do to survive. But like the frog in the pot that slowly yet steadily reaches boiling Walt got comfy and decided that he really liked that life. He settled old scores but in the end the boiling water consumed him. Walt reminds us early on of chirality -- the Greek word that means identical yet opposite…like our two hands. There is usually a really bad side and a really good side. We people are like that…capable of awful things and exceeding kind things. I digress…enjoy the song!
