I am really looking forward to seeing this movie in a I must see - TopicsExpress

I am really looking forward to seeing this movie in a I must see this because its important kind of a way. Heard Terry Gross interview the dad of one of the survivors. He was such an eloquent, powerful, spiritual man taking the highest ground in channeling this experience towards social justice. We were all in tears including Gross. The reality is this father deals with the real daily fear that his well intentioned son could be apprehended by any over zealous cop at any time & killed. This is the climate that has people of color feeling like they are not welcome citizens of their own country! We have family members who have been so deeply harassed by law enforcement alone because of the color of their skin that they have had to hold a level of deference that is an astonishing spiritual feat to me as a white woman. It is true we take that for granted & this movie will be an important reminder of the knapsack of privilege so many carry & the line of deference & invisible rules so many must abide by lest they be killed by those who were meant to serve & protect. This father in the interview points out that the advice that people of color should be extra cautious & polite around police is not going to solve the problem. That is merely a coping strategy for oppressive, policies. Better instead to appoint better chiefs of police, & choose officers to police neighborhoods where they too reside. Also have a police force which culturally represents the community they are patrolling.
