I am reposting this little piece that I wrote at this time last year … As I lay here recuperating from surgery, I find I have a lot of time on my hands, a lot of time to think. I live in a country that is full of freedoms and benefits, surrounded by love and peace; a country within a world full of chaos, evil, and oppression. And I have the luxury to just lay here and get better. “Lest We Forget”. What do these words mean to you? What do they mean to me? Every year, in early November, countless grainy faces stare from the profiles of endless people paying tribute to loved ones. Faces still loved by friends among us. Faces that smiled with peace and innocence in times of chaos and tyranny. Faces that fought on every continent. Faces that suffered, sacrificed, and died in faraway lands. Also, faces that survived. Faces that hide memories too horrific to share. Faces immortalized, their voices silenced by time and war. Faces I never knew, and faces that never knew me. Yet, they still fought for me, for all of us. They kept the evils of the world in evil places and off our doorsteps. They protected us from the very horrors that they lived and died in. They paid for our freedom with their blood, their lives, their friends, and their sanity. They did so without knowing most of us. What kind of person sacrifices for me without knowing who I am? These people are my heroes, personal and collective. What were their thoughts as they took their last breaths, dying for me in places no one else has seen? How distant and foreign that must have felt: lonely, cold, and scary. Or perhaps they came home afterwards, whether broken or whole, alive yet empty. Nothing they ever encountered again as difficult as what they left behind. They did so without knowing me. I never knew most of them, never got to shake their hands, or thank them. I never got to sit with them and just be grateful, because I never knew most of them. But, I will never forget them. And with all my gratitude, I will remember them.
