I am sharing this and wish to tell you about a mistake I made on Saturday. Brandie, was a greeter at (and the star of ) our Little Dog House table at the Spirit Seekers convention this past weekend. She got a lot of attention, which was the purpose for having her there. She brought people to our table - she SUMMONED people to our table. Yes, we pay her a salary. In tuna treats. Lots of tuna treats. : P Enough about Brandie. A little girl was petting Brandie, and she asked if she could kiss Brandie. I said yes. OMG I said YES!?! What was I thinking? Well, heres what I was thinking: a) the little girl was EXTREMELY gentle with Brandie; and b) Brandie is EXTREMELY gentle with everyone (including children) so I knew Brandie would be ok. But the minute it was out of my mouth, I knew I MADE A MISTAKE. So I told the little girl (and her mom) that it was nice of her to ask, but I made a mistake - I shouldnt have said yes. You should never kiss a dog. The mom asked why. So I explained why. I told her that dogs express and receive love differently than we do, and they do not enjoy kisses. You should NEVER kiss a dog. I know that Brandie would never bite a child. Do I really know that? Of course I do. Do I? This has been on my mind for a while now. A child should never be alone with any dog. A child should never put their face into a dogs face. A child should never be on a dog, pull at a dog, push a dog, or startle a dog. A child cannot know this. You have to protect your child. And I should have done better protecting Brandie.
