I am shocked --- deeply shocked --- at the comments posted by Ilonggos in defending incumbent officials against the issue of worsening graft and corruption. The common theme being peddled by these defenders of the throne is that we shouldnt mind the corruption, for as long as the projects are implemented. We should be thankful that there are projects, they contend. Such reactions remind me of the sermon last Sunday by Fr. Boboy Palencia at the SM Delgados Sto. Nino Sr. chapel. Fr. Boboy spoke of the blindness of many people to illustrate the Gospel reading about how Jesus Christ cured a blind man and made him regain his vision. Many people are blind to the truth, Fr. Boboy said. They are blind because they are afraid to antagonize or displease our public officials. Two days after I heard that sermon, Ilongga senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago castigated public officials behind the mega-projects that are being implemented in Iloilo City. Damo mga dalagku nga proyekto diri subong sa Iloilo City, she said. Bangud damo proyekto, dalagku man nga kickback ang ila ginabatun. Are our people losing their ability to know the truth? Or they now easily dazzled by the glitter of these projects, not even minding that their costs are padded by 100%? If this city --- and this nation --- go to the dogs, then we will have nobody else to blame but ourselves. We are allowing thieves to rob us blind, and we are even clapping our hands as they haul the money bags from the public treasury.
