I am so grateful to have recently received the following email. In my past, Ive allowed ugly, negative people to have me question who I am as a human being. Mr. Averettes email recharged my spirit and let me know that people are taking notice, even when youre not aware of it. Sanetta My thoughts about you have always been admiration and respect. You are a beautiful person. You were my secretary when you were sixteen and I convinced you to attend Bethel College. You went and distinguished yourself by making the school perform a Black play for you each year. You got a Television job at the Wichita TV station by telling them they had no Blacks and that you were the one. I attended your graduation . Black South Africans were your classmates and all spoke highly of you as to what a Black woman was. Then they went home and helped free their country. These are some of your classmates. I remember the Black Ms. Illinois contest that you entered. You should have won. And then you went on to be successful in life. You did all this yourself. I just pointed in the direction and you did the rest. I am a better person just knowing you and I speak of you often. Now I still teach at Columbia College and the Urban Life Center, now called the Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture. I have worked in public housing, with ex-offenders, took tours to Paris, France to show the Black side of Paris, to Kenya, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama studying Black people in each of these countries.
