I am sorry but this is not going to be popular but it’s the truth. Launceston town is in dire need of regeneration to increase footfall for the benefit of every business in town, and the fact is you only had to be at this year’s Carnival to see the people are out there and we need their feet in the town. It is clear to see that multi nationals or the Councils are not queuing up to invest in the town, but without doubt we need outside investment, the alternative we leave it as it is and that is clearly failing. So if it means Costa Coffee then so beit. Costa will have done their homework and will have looked at the spend and numbers of chimneys within striking distance. “They know what they will take in the first year”. The spin-off is not what you think the increased footfall will benefit every business in the town including the fantastic coffee shops we already have they need not worry. And if Costa was to fail they will have hopefully already started the trend to invest as others will follow on the back of Costa’s market research. So what do you want? Carry on moaning about the town and leave it as it is “Dead” Or support any outside investment that comes are way (Even if it fails) to help regenerate the town……….I could go on a lot longer, but if I had my way I would let anybody invest in the town and allow market forces decide if they are going to stay. Allow the new shopping area to expand (Scarne) and let the old town become the leisure/service town for the every growing population of Launceston with coffee shops, bars, café’s. I would even go so far as banning traffic and deliveries after 10.00am (Main deliveries to someone like Intercounty at Pennygillam so they can deliver early mornings) replace the old town gates, new entrance to the castle from the square, So as to march all visitors through the town on arrival and departure and make use of all the new facility’s. And before you disagree remember we have a great deal of good in the town we are just lacking the direction of footfall as I have said the people are out there, but at the moment we are losing them to surrounding towns who have allowed outside investment. And they don’t have a Castle………..!!!!
