I am truly saddened to learn of the sudden passing of one of the most compelling and influential teachers I ever had. If you say to any Hackley School alum who took Senior English during the almost 40 years that MR. ARTHUR NAETHING taught, Go forth…, he/she will respond …and spread beauty and light. And through his masterful presence; his potent channeling of Sir Laurence Olivier; his illumination of the truth about Tragedy—that in revealing both the most passionate aspirations and greatest flaws of humanity, it unites both king and commoner; and, of course, his annual assignment of the once-in-an-academic-lifetime Tragedy Paper itself, he inspired us to do just that—spread beauty and light throughout the rest of our days at Hackley and far beyond. He was a man, take him for all in all.
