I appreciate that Emma Watson is speaking some feminism to the UN, and I also deeply appreciate critiques of any feminism that doesnt also include race and class as central pillars (like over at Black Girl Dangerouss blog). But I mainly feel like... really? Were still at the point where its exciting, inspiring, gotta-share-this news when a woman asks men to actively care about women? Shouldnt we instead be pretty ashamed that THATS the awe-invoking message -- and that it takes one of the most well-loved, obsessed-over actresses in the world to make it acceptable (and she STILL has gotten rape and privacy-violating threats over it)? Over an uncomplicated, gently-worded feminist plea? I want to say, arent we in 2014?! but I know better than to equate the passage of time with inevitable progress. Heres my big *sigh* for the week.
