I attended the NUBSLI event in London yesterday afternoon and was deeply impressed by the work being done by the committee. Not only that, but the level of support being given by UNITE and other union bodies, truly highlighted the serious, and very real, future landscape for us and Deaf people. UNITE understands us and is lending us real support. Progress is being made in order to protect our profession and the rhetoric is very clear - it explains who we are and who we serve, along with the standards we have and why we have them. Our profession is in a serious situation and the risks are real. Weve seen the driving down of costs in many regions and its going to get worse if we dont fight this in a united way. I believe that the Deaf community, who we exist for and serve, will suffer greatly and a generation of skilled interpreters will become weakened and lost. Standards will drop, along with fees, and our numbers will dwindle. We need to look at this, and the wider picture, and do something now. I believe that we can turn the tide on this before its too late. I believe that NUBSLI is a vehicle in which our voice will be heard and listened to, but we need more numbers. NUBSLI is not another schism in our profession - its trying to unite and strengthen us. We need our Deaf interpreter and translator colleagues to be a part of this fight too. I urge you to join NUBSLI if you havent done so already. Over 20% of our profession are now members and the more we have the stronger we become. Unions arent everyones preferred option to allow voices to be heard, but were too small a profession to do this alone. Please give this message some serious thought. Thank you.
