I believe in a strong separation between church and state. So I do not think it is appropriate for a coach-designed cross to be on the official football helmets of any public university. To me, that is a pretty clear violation of our 1st Amendment right to be from the religions of others. But hey, Im a political science professor. The other day, an AState football player was leaving my class and I said to him, Hey, whats your take on the crosses-on-the helmets issue? He said, Hey, we totally knew that as a public university, we were not allowed to put a Christian symbol on our helmets. But, we wanted to honor our teammates and that was what we chose to do. We didnt think it would last too long.
