I believe that the minimum wage should be based on the value of the time that those workers give up to their employers; the value of time that could be spent with family and friends, pursuing their interests, worshipping their god and doing the things that make a life happy and meaningful. Any skills or talents they bring to the workplace should be compensated over and above that basic rate. Many Americans spend nearly 1/2 of their waking lives working. What is the true value of that kind of sacrifice? (Put another way, if a doctor told you that you would die in two years and your employer offered to buy one of those years from you, what do you think would be a fair amount of compensation?That number represents a fair starting point for a discussion about the minimum wage.
