I believe the following about the human race: On the one hand, I - TopicsExpress

I believe the following about the human race: On the one hand, I believe life can be hard, no matter what we tell ourselves. There is much cruelty, and many die every day at the hands of the unforgiving, abusers, and those who are filled with hate. Its truly Darwinian, this place we call Earth, and sometimes the brutality of the world overwhelms. Yet I also believe in the regenerative power of stories and that stories heal. Such stories as Biblical stories and the stories of Jesus are one kind, and such stories have healed me, given me hope at difficult moments. But other stories also heal and better the world. Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, had a humanist story he told in all his work -- that the human race can improve itself; become less violent, less hateful, less greedy, less abusive of children, etc. We can stop being cruel to animals too. I believe in his stories and stories written by other writers. I believe in Stephen Kings stories. One of his stories, the Shawshank Redemption, has helped millions to forgive and move on in their lives. I believe J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov -- to name a few -- have helped the world to evolve; to prepare us for the future. I believe in the regenerative power of myths, and as Joseph Campbell has said, I believe the power of myth is it awakens our awe before the mystery of being. So, while the world can be a very evil place, I believe in the worlds future, in humanitys future. We must keep telling our stories, the ones that heal and change us for the good. Thats what I want to do with the remaining years of my life -- tell a few good stories, stories that enlighten, give hope, make us want to do better. All those great writers and thinkers, like Jesus, Rowling, and Stephen King, are a tough act to follow. But I havent really rolled up my sleeves yet, either, and I have something to say -- something that will help the human race. I know it for sure. - Kherry McKay
