I believe this will be the next step in the theft of our 2 steers. I put up another sign in the front yard to let the neighbors know there is a thief among us. Increased reward fund for cattle rustling in Missouri Tuesday, March 28, 2006, 10:10 AM by Lane McConnell In a March meeting the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association (MCA) Board voted to permanently increase the MCA cattle theft reward fund from $2,000 to $5,000. The reward is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals committing felony cattle theft against Missouri Cattlemen’s Association members. David Moore, MCA President said in a prepared statement, “With the recent rash of cattle rustling in Missouri, we felt it imperative to respond in a way that will have a long lasting impact. Increasing the reward amount improves that chances an individual will report information about suspicious activity or persons they suspect of stealing cattle.” In 2005 the Missouri Highway Patrol reported that cattle were stolen in 29 counties in Missouri, accounting for an estimated $500,000 in losses to Missouri cattle producers. The MCA has also passed policy to establish a task force which addresses cattle theft in Missouri and Governor Matt Blunt recently announced the implementation of the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC). The MIAC creates a statewide database which individuals can report cattle theft and suspicious activity by calling 1-866-362-MIAC (6422). “The state patrol has done a great job reducing cattle theft,” said Missouri Cattlemen’s Association Executive Vice President Brent Bryant. “They have put together the task force that has been highly successful and we have seen the number of thefts dwindle the past several months.” There have been two pieces of legislation introduced that would also increase the penalty for cattle theft. Next month in Springfield Mo. state troopers, sheriffs and other law enforcement officials will complete training regarding cattle theft and rural crimes. All livestock auction markets in the state have been asked by the MCA and the Missouri Livestock Marketing Association to voluntarily keep photo identification on file of all farmers and ranchers selling cattle. “If there is somebody out there involved in cattle theft, the highway patrol is coming after them and we are going to put these criminals in jail for a long, long time,” said Bryant. Reward signs are available to all members to post on their farm or ranch. For more information, call the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association at (888) 499-9162 or visit mocattle.
