I bought a new PC at the weekend, and Windows 8 is sending my blood pressure into the danger zone. Like everyone else, I mourn the loss of the start button and find the replacement (a screen full of “apps” you don’t need) baffling. Even the basics are made complicated. Just to create a desktop shortcut for a program has involved an hour of hunting information online – and I still haven’t cracked it. Yesterday afternoon was devoted to learning how to by-pass the irritating log-on password screen. I’m not even going to mention turning on file sharing between computers on the wifi network. I know it takes a while to get set-up on a new machine, but the three days’ leave I had allocated turn out to have been woefully inadequate. Next time I buy a computer, I’ll try Apple.
