I can solve the Crimea problem in two words: recursive secession. But of course grasping rulers of States don’t think of things like this, despite secessions of Somaliland, former Yugoslavia, and the most obvious parallel, South Ossetia. The Jeffersonian solution is: Let Crimea secede. It’s a Russian speaking enclave; let them have government by consent. If there are Ukrainian enclaves in Crimea, let them in turn secede. And so on. But this is way too simple for ambitious rulers. Are USAmericans brainwashed by a State-captured mass media? You be the judge. Do your source explain that Crimea is NOT historically the Ukraine, that like Estonia and Latvia and Armenia was captured by the USSR. Even when Crimea was a “sovereign republic” in the USSR, most of the time it was separate from Ukraine. Why does your paper or TV show not tell you that most Crimeans don’t speak the same language as Ukrainians, and WANT to separate from Ukraine. Didn’t forcible opposition to seceding German enclaves (colonized during WWI) help spark WWII? Here we have national enclaves colonized by the USSR wanting their self-determination, a striking analogy. Does anyone learn from history? At any rate, this is all Somebody Else’s Problem and the red-fanged Beast that is the USEmpire should stay out of it.
