I caved in finally yesterday. Susan and I were both on our computers (me looking at LA River-appropriate kayaks to potentially purchase and Susan surfing the news), and our prehistoric DSL was literally choking under what what must have been the excruciating pressures involved in not being able to simultaneously load our respective REI and LATimes pages for upwards of more than a minute. Do you know how much hair you can yank out in that interminable 60 second-plus interval? PLENTY. So I broke down and called AT&T and got someone androgynous-sounding in Bangalore or Manila whose real name you KNOW wasnt Chris and ordered up their U-verse for our internet and landline. It wasnt easy. I said oh no there wont when this LONG-SUFFERING AT&T customer was told there would be a credit check involved, and Chris hastily backed off that demand. And when I pushed back strong when told there would be a combined $200 in installation and new modem fees, Chris put me on hold to speak with his or her supervisor and came back to magically waive those fees, which was good for AT&T because I wouldve hung up if they hadnt. Even better, our bill for the two new services will cut our bill in half for a year and after that still be about $10 cheaper a month than what were paying now. The new speed wont be anything to get up and dance a jig over, basically doubled from 1.5 Mbps to 3.0, but it is faster for cheaper so dont mind me if I do a bit of the Cabbage Patch from my desk chair.
