I coached my first team when I was a junior in high school. It was the sixth grade girls D basketball team-- these were kids who didnt make the A, B, or C level team and had no parent-volunteer to coach them, but still wanted to play. The athletic director asked my friend, Julie, and me if we would be willing to coach their team. Julie and I were in our fifth year of playing basketball together, her dad and my mom had coached our team in seventh and eighth grade, and now, as juniors, we had just made varsity. Even though the girls on our team were brand new to the sport, I poured my heart into coaching that team. I had our hour-long practices scheduled down to ten minute intervals. I offered early morning extra coaching to any kid willing to meet me in the gym before school. We lost every game all season, but the girls got better and learned to play and in the last game of the season we lost by only one point to a team that had trounced us in the beginning of the season and we all reacted uproariously as if we had just won. I knew I wanted to coach my kids teams, just like my mom had coached mine, long before I even had kids, but this year, I nearly got cold feet at the beginning of the season...
