I come from a very long line of yellow-dog Democrats, at least on my mothers side of the family. My grandmother, the late, great Jewel Phillips, and her mother, the late, great Drucy Beavers, spoke of the great things of FDR, JFK, LBJ and even Jimmy Carter (though if they were alive today, I would have to help them gently see the error of their ways when it comes to Jimmy Carter, but I digress). My mother, a social worker, is even more liberal than I am (and yes, that is possible). So, what does it tell you about the differences in the parties back in the days when my mother was a child and my grandparents were politically active when a quote like this could actually come from a Republican president? Will we ever get back to a time when there is compromise and at least some agreement between the two parties? If we cannot, then we will see the decline and fall of the modern-day Roman empire. In fact, I think we already are.
