I confess Id been praying to St. Christopher a lot the last few - TopicsExpress

I confess Id been praying to St. Christopher a lot the last few days Christopher is the demoted patron saint of travel - but will always be my own personal fodors angel!) See, travel to Hampton Bays from Gotham is a bit dodgy this time of year. Dont ask why… But the Jitney and Vicki prevailed - and the #Homegrown Talk & Taste @HBLibrary #HamptonBaysLibrary was a smashing success, as you can see from the photos. Vicki picked me up from the Jitney - introduced me to Paneros and then whisked us to the Hampton Bay Library. Its a gem of a Library, too. A fireplace room where I worked filing a story until Chef Bryan Futerman Foodys arrived and we set up. The guests were a brilliant clutch of an audience -- interested, engaged and I could sense their homegrown pride in all things Long Island - especially as it related to food. It looked like a full room too. I was thrilled and surprised to see my friends from the North Fork walk in! @AnneHoward & her husband @MortCogen. They are #foodies and naturally belong to sang Lee Farms CSA - in fact, as I was going through my presentation & the image of Karen, Sang Lee, the inspired grower featured in the Homegrown book with chefs @ElizabethRonzetti & @AdamKopels - 18 Bay Shelter Island restaurant, flashed on the screen, I recounted for the patrons how I re-met Anne at the Farm! Worlds colliding… The chance meeting reignited a lovely friendship. See how food brings people together? Sadly, I had to scoot in order to make the last Jitney back to town - so Maria put the pedal to the metal - made like Cannonball Run and headed off the jitney coach. St. Christopher should be reinstated. I bid sad goodbyes to have to leave so quickly after such a vibrant talk. Especially to such a stellar audience. Meanwhile, Chef Bryan picked up the baton and made two recipes from The Hampton & Long Island Homegrown Cookbook - his gazpacho soup is a 5-star favorite - he made it for the The Horticultural Society of New York talk & taste and it was a huge hit there. Chef Bryan is now the sous chef Nick & Tonis East Hampton. So of course he was able to pick some fresh herbs & veggies straight away from the garden there at the restaurant. In the Homegrown Cookbook you read how Seedtime by Scott Chaskey - Peconic Land Trust & team created & continue to maintain the garden. Scott has a new book out - Seedtime -- be sure to get it - hes an inspired food and grower thought-leader. I cant wait to get my autographed copy. More good news: Chef Bryan will be a delegate from Slow Food East End for #EdibleSchoolYards for his work with the areas school gardens, including Springs and Hampton Bays. Chef Bryan is going to Italy in the autumn!! Cant think of a better foodie representative for the East End, can you?! Thank you so much to Vicki Drescher from Hampton Bays Library - she met Chef Bryan & me at last seasons #AuthorsNight the East Hampton Library and asked then & there if we could do a presentation for her library patrons. It was truly an honor. Thank you so very much for the invitation, the set up, the organization. Big Homegrown hugs to Hampton Bays Library and staff. See you in the fireplace room :)
