I consciously try to avoid posting controversial statuses on Facebook, but some of the posts about Robin Williams death struck a chord with me. We will never fully understand the complexities of his emotional and mental health; clearly he was fighting his own demons and felt so utterly hopeless that taking his own life seemed to be his only escape. Its a heartbreaking, tragic situation, and not just because the world lost a talented actor and comedian, but because his loved ones lost a husband, a father, an uncle, and a friend. Depression is an incredibly painful burden to bear and when we speak flippantly of this issue, saying things like, He should have just sucked it up or I cant believe he was such a coward, we further isolate individuals who need love and compassion more than ever; individuals who are fighting their own demons, just like Robin did. Were just building up walls that shut down dialogue about this difficult topic. If you know someone who is sad, depressed, or lonely, go and give them a hug or take them out for coffee. We may never fully grasp the human condition, but we can always show love, which could, in turn, save a life. RIP Robin Williams.
