I did the survey i alwasy feel a bit hollow after surveys, bit like pouring your passion down a drain So I thought Id share what I thought here as well in case someone else wants to converse: from what I have read the sole use for seclusion is a punishment, it has no therapeutic values Restraint sometimes is required but very rarely if staff stop winding people up. Kindness compassion and understanding and a therapeutic alliance work fine Locking people up by themselves is a well established method of torture. Restrained people, become alienated, angry, rebellious It is direct attack on peoples need for autonomy people especially if they are unwell need autonomy and control over their lives The key to change is an attitude change not more technology or training Staff so frequently believe that punishing people with mental health issues is effective or “normal” Punishing people may increase compliance but you cant punish people into being well! If people are, being restrained it needs to be clear and obvious why it is being done so in a way physical or mechanical restraint is better Emotional restrain is ambiguous, arbitrary and hard to monitor - the value needs to be DONT I dont believe there is ever, justification for seclusion, it has no therapeutic values Seclusion is not the same as a place to take time out but that needs to be under the control of the patient I think that total elimination of seclusion and restraint should be the goal We would have to find out if it is possible The practice of seclusion and restraint DO NOT help staff OR patients It causes a culture of fear and distrust where there should be a therapeutic alliance. there can never be trust where such a stark power imbalance exists sensible people lie to psychiatrists how could it be otherwise when the psychiatrist has such enormous arbitrary power
