I didnt vote yesterday, because I didnt see the point. The last - TopicsExpress

I didnt vote yesterday, because I didnt see the point. The last six years represent a largely wasted opportunity in my eyes, for Democrats to show a strong alternative to W and neo conservative policies. Instead, military interventionism has continued, Guantanamo remains open, our intelligence services like the NSA are more out of control than ever, and our dependence on fossil fuels and carbon emissions has continued apace. I will say that healthcare reform has been a shining light, forcing the insurance companies to insure those with preexisting conditions, and provide a transparent marketplace for coverage. Not nearly far enough, but perhaps a step in the right direction. And that, to me, encapsulates the Obama presidency and the stewardship of the Senate majority by the Democratic party. A series of half measures and apologies, and continuations of Bush era policies. Meanwhile the Republican hate machine continues to sway an uninformed public, convincing people of things that are false, and to vote against their own interest. I canvassed for John Kerry in Pennsylvania and helped found a liberal political action committee. I was a delegate for Obama at the Idaho state Democratic Convention. I believed in change. I know why the Democratic base stayed home yesterday, because the Democratic party has failed to show the conviction we expected and demanded in the past six years. It is sad to me that the scope of political discourse has moved so far to the right that the Democratic opening proposal for healthcare reform is a carbon copy of Mitt Romneys Massachusetts law, and extra-judicial executions by drone strike on foreign soil are no longer news worthy due to their frequency. From this point forward, I plan to vote third party, or not at all, until the Democratic party moves left. I used to believe that voting for a third party would only help Republicans. In the short term, that is probably correct, but voting Democrat when the party no longer strongly pursues liberal principles is only enabling them to continue moving to the right. I fully expect the next few years to be terrible for the country, as the Tea Party rises to power. But I accept that it may be the only way to create the space needed for a true liberal opposition to emerge, which would be good for the country in the long run.
